Coloring Books and Countdowns

Man i am bad at keeping this journal updated.... Well here is my post for this year...
I will be at a booth at the upcoming Salt Lake Comic Con and I am going to post something new and cool daily as a countdown to it. You can see more of this on my official blog: metallicvisions.wordpress.com/

Twelve Tales

My latest project is a series of images I am calling the Twelve Tales. It is a study of heroines in 12 stories which are as follows:
Snow White
Cinderella
Rapunzel
Sleeping Beauty
The Goose Girl
Rumplestiltskin
Red Ridding Hood
The Frog Prince
Swan Lake
East of the Sun, West of the Moon
Beauty and the Beast
The Little Mermaid
The heroines in these stories represent some of the best, and most overlooked in my opinion, attributes there are. Snow White is unfailingly kind, Beauty is patient and loving, the heroine of East of the Sun West of the Moon is brave and forthright in journeying to right her wrongs, and sleeping beauty is full of hope.
I have always found profound value in these "fairy tales". In our century they have been dimmed down to mere children's tales but there is value plain to see in the source materials. The mere fact that Cinderella is a heroine born of many countries from Germany and France to China (seriously check out wikipedia on the subject) is a powerful indicator of the cultural importance of these stories.
I have put a lot of work on the symbolism in the pictures to come, and not all of them are in and of themselves 'traditional tales' (as in Swan Lake, more of a modern story taking cues and themes from much older tales.) However I think you will enjoy the outcomes hopefully as much and I am enjoying making the series.
